*On the first anniversary of the tragic death of 14-year-old Lanaya Krank, her mother, Lynette Patton, joined by civil rights leader Najee Ali, Senior Organizer of Los Angeles Metropolitan Churches, is calling on California Attorney General Rob Bonta to launch an independent state investigation into the events surrounding Lanaya’s death.
Lanaya, a freshman at Cajon High School in San Bernardino, was subjected to relentless racial bullying and harassment by fellow students who allegedly encouraged her to take her own life. On October 18, 2024, Lanaya, did take her own life, leaving her family and community devastated.
Despite repeated concerns raised to school officials about the bullying, Lanaya’s family says their pleas for help went unanswered, and no comprehensive investigation has been conducted into the actions of the students involved or the possible negligence by school administrators.
“My daughter deserved to be protected,” said Lynette Patton, Lanaya’s mother. “She was only 14 years old and full of life. Instead of receiving help, she was pushed to a point no child should ever experience. We want justice and accountability — not just for Lanaya, but for every student who is being bullied and ignored by those responsible for their safety.”

Civil rights leader Najee Ali added:
“This case demands independent oversight. The San Bernardino Unified School District failed to act when it mattered most, and we cannot allow this tragedy to be swept under the rug. We are calling on Attorney General Rob Bonta to step in and ensure a full and transparent investigation into Lanaya’s death.”
Patton and Ali emphasized that Lanaya’s death reflects a larger crisis of student bullying, racial hostility, and school inaction across California. They are urging the Attorney General’s Office to determine whether criminal or civil violations occurred, and to issue recommendations to protect vulnerable students statewide.
A press conference will be held at Cajon High School to mark the one-year anniversary of Lanaya’s death and to renew calls for justice.
