*One week after her release, Karen Huger recounted her experience behind bars during “The Real Housewives of Potomac” Season 10 finale. She spoke with Andy Cohen about the challenges she faced while serving six months in Maryland’s Montgomery County Detention Center for a DUI conviction.
Cameras followed Karen as she left the facility and reunited with her husband, Ray Huger, daughter Rayvin Huger, and sister Bridget. “I have been through hell, Andy. I have been through hell and back,” she said, per Bravo.
Karen opened up about her March 2024 arrest and her battle with addiction. Although she anticipated going to jail, the length of her sentence surprised her. “I was shocked. I knew I was going to jail. I had made peace with that. But I thought maybe a month, no more than three. But this was just one more step toward accepting my responsibility for what I did.”
While incarcerated, she chose to participate fully in prison life, volunteering to lead Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and declining special treatment, though she had her own cell. “There’s no cushiness there,” she said, recalling a steel toilet and sink and lining her seat with maxi pads for the first night.
Her routine provided structure, which she found helpful for recovery. “I loved the discipline of it. I needed that, to be honest. It was part of recovery. It was structure.” Meals were less enjoyable, and she described surviving “on astronaut food.”
Addressing the reality show’s role in her struggles, Karen insisted, “Not at all. The show actually saved me. It occupied me. I think I would have spiraled quicker without it. It gave me discipline. I had a routine. So, I can’t hate it. I don’t hate it. And I don’t need to blame it either.”
Taking responsibility for her actions, she added, “I was responsible for me. I was sick. I have the disease of alcoholism. I have the disease of, you know, taking prescription medicine and abusing it. That’s me.”
