*Bravo star Karen Huger was found guilty in her Maryland DUI case, stemming from a March incident where she crashed her car in Potomac.
Police reported she crossed a median and hit street signs. Body-cam footage from the trial revealed Huger, 61, admitting to drinking before the accident and refusing a sobriety test, suggesting she should have “probably taken a cab.” As USA TODAY reports, in the footage, “The Real Housewives of Potomac” star appeared to slur her words, claimed to be “really rich” and “Thomas Jefferson’s concubine,” and told an officer he would be “ashamed” after Googling her.
In a statement to TMZ in March, Huger said before the accident, she was having dinner with a friend when they “brought up some very emotionally sensitive topics.”
“I was crying on my way home and saw a car heading right for me. I swerved to avoid the head-on collision, hit the divider and then a tree. I’m hurt, bruised up a bit, but so grateful I am alive!”
She continued: “I did receive citations, one of which was unrelated to the incident which is understandable, but what was most surprising is that the car that almost hit me just drove away!”
On Wednesday, Huger was found guilty of DUI, negligent driving, failure to control speed to avoid a collision, and failure to notify of an address change. She was acquitted of reckless driving. Her sentencing hearing is set for Jan. 29.
“Driving under the influence is extremely dangerous behavior. We prosecute thousands of D.U.I. cases every year and take them seriously,” state’s attorney John McCarthy told USA TODAY in a statement.
McCarthy said Huger’s “case was not handled any differently based on the facts and her traffic history. We encourage the public to always drive sober and practice safety on the roads.”
Huger’s attorney, A. Scott Bolden, told PEOPLE magazine: “Although we are disappointed in the jury’s verdict, we, of course, respect their decision and appreciate their time hearing our case. We continue to reserve Mrs. Huger’s right to an appeal and intend to fully pursue justice on her behalf.”
