*Justin Hartley (“This Is Us,” “Smallville“) was at the 92nd Street Y in New York City answering questions after a screening of “Tracker.”
The second season of “Tracker” continues to air on CBS, on Sundays. “Out of the Past,” the season’s premier, is one of the series’ best yet. Tracker was the number-one television show for the 2023-2024 season.
It has reached over eighty-one million viewers since it debuted in February. Each episode averaged about 11.58 million viewers.
Those are impressive numbers for a broadcast television show. With that in mind, I asked Justin if he had any idea the show would be so popular.
“No, not at all,” he said.

Hartley continued: “I knew that we were given a shot, and I appreciated it when the network told us that the studio was going to option the book for us. The studio and the network worked together on this and made it everything that it is. They advertised it like crazy, and they really did a fantastic job of just building it. But much like “This Is Us,” and I think probably anything else, you never know. You just don’t know if it’s going to find an audience. I felt like I could build a show that would have an audience. But this level, I didn’t know.”

Now that it’s established it is a success, can you explain why?
“I think we hit all the right buttons. You have to root for the character. The characters have to make sense.
“The timing of it must make sense. And you try to find that elusive audience. And I think part of doing that is creating a show that everyone can watch together. The show is kind of a throwback to an older style of show that we don’t really have anymore. And I think there’s an appetite for more of those. There’s a throwback to those characters that we used to see but not that much anymore.”
That’s for sure.
Justin assured that sought-after actor and special guest, Jensen Ackles (“Supernatural”), will return.

“Tracker” has an inclusive cast and stories. Cast member Eric Graise is a double-leg amputee. He was invited by the Barack Obama administration to speak as a part of the 25th Anniversary Celebration of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
