*Former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax (D) and his wife, Dr. Cerina Fairfax, were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide at their home early Thursday morning, according to Fairfax County Police. The couple’s two teenage children were present during the horrific incident but were not physically harmed.
Police responded to the 8100 block of Guinevere Drive shortly after midnight on April 16, 2026, following a desperate 911 call placed by one of the couple’s sons. Officers arrived to find a scene of unimaginable violence.
Police Detail Shooting, Divorce as Motive
Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis confirmed during a morning news conference that Justin Fairfax, 47, shot his wife multiple times in the basement of the family home. The former lieutenant governor then went upstairs to a bedroom and turned the gun on himself, dying from a single self-inflicted wound.
Authorities described the shooting as stemming from an “ongoing domestic dispute” tied to a messy divorce the couple was navigating. Police believe paperwork related to the divorce — possibly child custody or financial settlement documents — may have served as an immediate trigger for the violence. Court records show the divorce had been pending for several months and was described by friends as increasingly contentious.
“This is an absolute tragedy on every level,” Chief Davis said at the news conference. “Two people are dead, and two children have now lost both parents in a single night. Our investigation is continuing, but there is no ongoing threat to the public. This was an isolated, horrific domestic event.”
Dr. Cerina Fairfax was a respected physician who had been practicing medicine in Northern Virginia for over a decade. Colleagues described her as dedicated, compassionate, and deeply committed to her patients. The couple had been married for nearly 20 years and shared two teenage children, whose names have not been released.
Fairfax’s Political Rise and Fall
Justin Fairfax served as Virginia’s 41st Lieutenant Governor from 2018 to 2022. Once considered a rising star in the Democratic Party and a strong contender for governor, his political career was severely damaged in 2019 amid the state’s broader political crisis.
That year, two women accused Fairfax of sexual assault. Dr. Vanessa Tyson alleged a 2004 incident in Boston during the Democratic National Convention. Meredith Watson alleged a separate assault in 2000 while both were undergraduate students at Duke University. Fairfax strongly denied both allegations, calling them a politically motivated “smear.” No criminal charges were ever filed in either jurisdiction, and Fairfax passed polygraph tests he voluntarily took.
He later ran for governor in 2021 but finished poorly in the Democratic primary, unable to overcome the cloud of allegations. The scandal became a major test case in the #MeToo era, sparking debates about due process and the timing of accusations.
The allegations have resurfaced in coverage of Thursday’s tragedy, though police have stated the murder-suicide appears directly related to the couple’s divorce proceedings, not the past claims. Fairfax had maintained his innocence until his death.
A Developing Tragedy
The Fairfax County Police Department continues to investigate. Authorities have confirmed that the couple’s teenage children are safe and currently with extended family members receiving crisis counseling. No further details about the divorce or the specific trigger have been released.
