*Jalen Rose is back on screen, this time bringing his real-life passion for Detroit education to a dramatic, family-friendly TV series. “South West High,” now streaming on Tubi, follows Nolan Thomas (Rose), a former professional basketball player who returns to his alma mater as principal, determined to rebuild the struggling inner-city school that once saved him.
The series paints a candid picture of urban education, exploring themes of leadership, accountability, and sacrifice. As Nolan works to reform the school, he confronts the challenges of balancing discipline, community expectations, and the personal stakes of guiding young lives. “Gritty and hopeful, “South West High” is a portrait of urban education, honoring educators and resilient students who refuse to give up,” according to the series synopsis. “We are thrilled to partner with Tubi to debut South West High,” Rose said. “Since opening the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy in 2011, I’ve had a front-row seat to the determination, resilience and ambition of young people in Detroit. This series is fiction, but the spirit behind it is very real.”

He added that the project was also an opportunity to collaborate with longtime friend and former classmate Ty Mopkins, further grounding the series in Detroit’s community.
The ensemble cast includes Dawn Halfkenny, Towanda Braxton, Christina Cooper, Stevie Baggs Jr., Brooklyn “Queen” Oates, and Don Brumfield Jr., with guest appearances from Anna Maria Horsford, Sada Baby, and Maurielle Lue. Behind the scenes, the series is created and executive produced by Rose, Mopkins, and Dennis Reed II, with music supervision by GRAMMY-nominated artist Royce 5’9” and an original score composed alongside Denaun Porter.
“South West High” premiered on Tubi on February 23, with five hour-long episodes releasing weekly. The series marks the first original project from Same Page Entertainment, Rose’s Detroit-based production company, which aims to spotlight local talent and tell stories inspired by the city’s youth, culture, and resilience.
