*Musicians from the hip-hop world are commanding attention in Hollywood’s awards season with performances that demonstrate serious dramatic range. As Variety reports, three artists in particular are generating significant industry buzz for their work on screen while continuing to dominate in their primary musical careers.
Teyana Taylor has emerged as a strong contender in supporting actress discussions for her work in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another.” She portrays Perfidia Beverly Hills, a French 75 revolutionary who abandons family obligations, delivering what critics describe as deeply vulnerable work. Taylor previously showed her dramatic capabilities in “A Thousand and One” from 2023, and she’s simultaneously earning recognition in music with her first Grammy nomination for best R&B album for “Escape Room.”
A$AP Rocky appears in two prominent films this year, starting with Spike Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest,” an A24-Apple production inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 film “High and Low.” Rocky takes on the character Archie/Yung Felon in this crime thriller starring Denzel Washington. His second role comes in Mary Bronstein’s “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You,” where he plays motel superintendent James opposite Rose Byrne. The three-time Grammy nominee is also preparing to release his fourth album, “Don’t Be Dumb,” in January.

Tyler, the Creator appears in Josh Safdie’s A24 thriller “Marty Supreme,” performing under his legal name Tyler Okonma. The 34-year-old plays Wally, a taxi driver connected to Timothée Chalamet’s main character. The two-time Grammy winner currently has five Grammy nominations, including album of the year for “Chromakopia.”
This wave of talent follows established precedents set by Ice Cube, Queen Latifah, Will Smith, and others who successfully navigated both music and film worlds. The difference now is the concentration of artists making this transition simultaneously, forcing the entertainment industry to recognize hip-hop performers as multidimensional creators rather than novelty casting choices.
