*DreamWorks Animation is venturing into new mythological territory with its latest original film, “Forgotten Island,” and the newly released trailer is already generating serious buzz.
The animated adventure comes from the filmmaking team behind “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” — Academy Award nominee Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado directing, with Academy Award nominee Mark Swift producing.
At the heart of the story are Jo and Raissa, two lifelong best friends voiced by Grammy and Academy Award winner H.E.R. and Liza Soberano, known for her roles in “Lisa Frankenstein” and “Alone/Together.” The pair have been inseparable since grade school but are on the verge of going their separate ways after high school graduation.
On their last night together, a mysterious portal pulls them into Nakali, a fantastical island teeming with magical and mythological creatures rooted in Filipino folklore, per the news release.

Once there, the two friends must navigate a world full of both allies and enemies. They are joined by a well-meaning but bumbling weredog named Raww, voiced by Dave Franco, along with a small but spirited crew of companions. Standing in their way is The Dreaded Manananggal, the island’s most feared creature, brought to life by Tony Award-winning icon Lea Salonga. The stakes could not be higher — Jo and Raissa discover that the memories of their entire friendship will be erased unless they find a way off the island in time.
The voice cast is rounded out by an impressive lineup of talent. Emmy nominee Jenny Slate of “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” and “Dying for Sex,” Manny Jacinto from “The Good Place” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” BAFTA nominee Dolly de Leon of “Triangle of Sadness” and “Ghostlight,” global comedy star Jo Koy from “Haunted Mansion,” and Emmy winner Ronny Chieng of “The Daily Show” and “M3GAN” all lend their voices to the project.
“Forgotten Island” is distributed by Universal Pictures. Watch the trailer above.
