*Marvel Studios’ timeline for “Black Panther 3” appears to have changed, with the sequel now expected to debut later in 2028.
The adjustment extends the wait for audiences eager to revisit Wakanda, nearly four years after the release of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Earlier reports pointed to a February 2028 premiere, but updated information indicates the film has been moved back by several months, The Direct reports.
Ryan Coogler is still set to direct the third installment, continuing his involvement with the franchise. The additional time may provide space to further develop the next chapter, which follows a story that has already undergone significant evolution in recent years.
Although the standalone sequel is still some time away, Wakanda will not be absent from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Characters connected to the nation are expected to feature in upcoming crossover films “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” maintaining their presence in the broader narrative.
Both earlier films in the series achieved major success. “Black Panther” received seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and secured three wins, while also becoming one of the highest-grossing entries in the MCU. Its follow-up, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” continued that momentum both critically and commercially.
The storyline heading into the third film remains undisclosed, but prior developments offer several directions. Shuri stepped into the role of Black Panther, M’Baku gained influence as a leader, and the introduction of Toussaint, T’Challa’s son, pointed toward future possibilities for Wakanda’s leadership.
One confirmed addition to the cast is Denzel Washington, who shared, “[Director] Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next Black Panther. After that, I’m going to do the film of Othello,” Washington said. “After that, I’m going to do King Lear. After that, I’m going to retire.”
Coogler later spoke about working with the actor, stating, “Denzel is family at this point … I’ve been trying to work with him since day one,” and adding, “I think he’s the greatest living actor, and in terms of what he means to our culture, forget about it. I’ve been talking to him about this for a long time.”
Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, and Danai Gurira are all expected to return, while Angela Bassett is not anticipated to appear following her character’s death in the previous installment.
