*Habit Burger & Grill is turning its latest national honor into a weeklong celebration for customers and first responders.
From Aug. 12 through Aug. 18, participating restaurants will offer a free Double Char with purchases of at least $10. The promotion follows the chain’s third consecutive Best Burger win in USA Today’s 2026 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards. Habit also earned the Best Fast Casual Restaurant title for the second year in a row.
The Double Char finished ahead of several familiar competitors. In-N-Out’s Double-Double placed second, followed by Freddy’s Original Double. Burgers from A&W, Culver’s, Shake Shack, Five Guys, Burger King, Wendy’s and Whataburger completed the top 10.
“We could have taken a bow. Instead, we’re taking a victory lap,” Chief Marketing Officer Jack Hinchliffe said, per Business Insider. “This win belongs to our restaurant teams and the fans who keep showing up for the Double Char. Three years at #1 tells us this isn’t a fluke, it’s what happens when you never compromise.”

That victory lap will include a food truck tour through California, where Habit opened its first restaurant in Santa Barbara in 1969. Planned stops include San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco and Sacramento.
The tour will feature local media appearances and public pop-up events. Habit also plans to serve meals at firehouses as a gesture of appreciation for firefighters and other first responders.
Habit prepares the Double Char with two beef patties cooked over an open flame. The burger also includes caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, pickles and mayonnaise on a toasted bun.
The popular eatery credits its flame-grilling method for the smoky flavor that has defined its burgers for decades. Public voting and expert nominations determined the USA Today rankings.
