*Essence Ventures announced on August 25 that Caroline Wanga, its President and CEO, has resigned after being on health leave since September 2024. Wanga, who joined the company in June 2020, led the organization through a dynamic four-year period, expanding its portfolio and reinforcing its commitment to uplifting Black women and culture.
Richelieu Dennis, Founder and Chairman of Sundial Technology & Media Group, the parent company of Essence Ventures, commended Wanga’s contributions. “We are profoundly grateful to Caroline for her leadership, vision, and unwavering advocacy of Black women and culture,” Dennis said, per Ice Cream Comvos.
“Her expertise in culture, equity, and organizational change has fueled progress across the ESSENCE Ventures portfolio. Caroline has left an indelible mark on ESSENCE and beyond, and we celebrate the many ways she has amplified our mission and impact,” Dennis added.
Wanga’s departure coincides with challenges faced by the Essence Festival of Culture, a cornerstone event for New Orleans’ summer tourism. This year’s festival, held over the July 4th weekend, saw a significant decline in lodging bookings. According to CoStar, hotel occupancy across approximately 40,000 rooms in New Orleans dropped by about 15% from Friday to Sunday compared to the previous year. AirDNA reported a similar trend, with short-term rental bookings on platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo falling between 12% and 17% each night from Thursday to Sunday.
Tourism officials expressed uncertainty about the cause of the downturn. “I don’t have a single reason for the softness,” said Jim Cook, general manager of the Sheraton New Orleans. “It’s gotten harder to determine. But based on the visitors we had, the spending behavior is similar to past years, so I wouldn’t attribute it to macroeconomics without data,” he added.

David Piscola, who manages the Hilton New Orleans Riverside, also noted the dip in business during the festival weekend.
On the same day as the resignation announcement, Wanga addressed her departure on Instagram, reposting a message from July 10 to clarify misconceptions. Quoting an African proverb, “Until the Lion Learned to Write, All Stories Favored the Hunter,” she wrote, “Out of an abundance of courtesy I share this regarding my personal integrity, professional ethos & purpose journey.”
She emphasized, “#ImHighlyPercentSure that some missing knowledge has led to false assumptions regarding my leave as President/CEO that predated the activation of operational planning for a significant annualized event.”
Wanga firmly denied any connection between her career decisions and the company’s challenges, stating, “My holistic career experiences amidst the current socioeconomic climate have NO PROVEN ROLE in the current state of affairs within the company and its supporters.”
She called for constructive dialogue, saying, “Leveraging factual and constructive observations, insights and experiences is the only appropriate way to drive change and should take place as often as needed in service of progressing forward.”
Wanga also cautioned against misinformation: “The ‘defamation’ and ‘disparagement’ smoke that accompanies correlating the uncorrelated ain’t what anyone should want. Take Heed.”
