DC Woman Erica Hopper Charged in Shocking Elder Theft Case
*Erica Hopper, 45, of Washington, D.C., is facing major criminal charges for allegedly stealing over $266,000 from her 95-year-old grandfather. Authorities say the Navy veteran suffers from Alzheimer’s and was left nearly broke by the time the theft was uncovered.
Hopper was arrested on August 27, 2025, after a lengthy investigation by Montgomery County Police. She’s now facing multiple felonies, including theft, fraud, and embezzlement of funds meant for a vulnerable adult, NBC Washington is reporting.

Lavish Spending Included Trips, Plastic Surgery, and Concerts
Investigators revealed Hopper used the stolen money to live a luxury lifestyle that included high-end shopping and celebrity concerts. Records show she spent $25,000 on a 2022 Kia Stinger, and $49,000 on cosmetic surgery and designer items.
She also spent $50,000 on travel to cities like New Orleans, Miami, and Las Vegas. Some receipts show purchases tied to Usher’s 2023–2024 tour. Another $10,000 went to a personal trainer and wellness retreats.
Police Say Power of Attorney Was Misused Over Three Years
Hopper was granted power of attorney in December 2020. From November 2021 through June 2025, she allegedly siphoned money from her grandfather’s accounts. Police say over $150,000 came from a home sale and pension funds.
Investigators found text messages where Hopper justified her spending as “care costs.” But police dispute that, citing bank records and lease documents as proof of personal use.

Defense Claims Mental Health and Pandemic Strespps Played a Role
Hopper’s lawyer, Mark Goldstone, filed a motion claiming she struggled with mental health issues and financial stress after COVID. He’s asking for a plea deal in exchange for restitution payments.
He also argues that some funds went toward her grandfather’s care. However, police say bank records prove otherwise, and that her actions show a clear pattern of misuse.
Grandfather’s Savings Gone, Now in Assisted Living Facility
The 95-year-old victim now lives in a Silver Spring assisted living center. His finances are controlled by a trust manager after being fully depleted by mid-2024.
The family first alerted police in November 2021, sparking a financial crimes investigation that lasted nearly four years. The full stolen amount was revealed to be $266,412.73.
Community and Media React to the Exploitation Case
The story has gained heavy traction online and on TV news, especially due to the involvement of concert tickets and plastic surgery. Usher himself expressed sympathy on social media, and posts about the case have gone viral.
Organizations like AARP Maryland have responded with a petition to strengthen laws around power of attorney. It had over 2,000 signatures by September 3, 2025.

What Makes This Case Stand Out Nationwide
This case has sparked national outrage due to its combination of elder abuse, celebrity ties, and financial manipulation. Experts say it highlights the growing issue of elder financial exploitation.
The National Council on Aging reports 1 in 10 older adults face financial abuse. This case puts a face to that statistic—and may help drive change in D.C. policies moving forward.
Erica Hopper in the News and Online Spotlight
With news stories from NBC4 Washington, Fox 5 DC, and WJLA, the case has become a trending topic. On social media platform X, it received over 65,000 mentions within days.
Public opinion is divided. While some express sympathy over her mental health claims, most are outraged by the betrayal of a vulnerable family member.
Why Erica Hopper’s Trial Matters to Everyone
Hopper’s case is more than a family drama—it’s a warning sign. Financial abuse of the elderly is often hidden, and this trial could set legal precedents for accountability and POA reform.
She is set to appear in court on September 15 for a pre-trial hearing. The trial begins on October 14, and prosecutors plan to push for a 10-year sentence if she’s convicted.
