*Elon Musk has been working overtime to dismantle and replace the traditional U.S. government with what aligns with Donald Trump’s idea of a federal government.
While Musk may be out of reach of those displeased with his controversial actions, his Tesla is not so insulated. As per a CNN Business report, Tesla is feeling the pinch as consumers who are unhappy with Musk’s overreach register their disapproval by boycotting Tesla products.
Even before he actively began reshaping the U.S. government, Tesla was already performing dismally; in 2024, Tesla registered disappointing results. The sales declined further in January after the US elections, which resulted in Musk being designated to run the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge).
It’s too early to pin down Tesla’s poor sales on Elon Musk’s controversial role in Trump’s government since car buyers base decisions about which car to buy on multiple factors, so there may be other non-political reasons behind Tesla’s weak sales numbers. But again, there could be something political taking shape.

In January 2025, Tesla registered a nearly 12% drop in sales in California which is a key market for the electric vehicle (EV) maker. That was in comparison to the same period last year. An analysis by Electrek suggests that things could be heading south for Tesla in Europe; the company’s sales dropped in every market. In Spain, Tesla sold 75.4% fewer units compared to January 2024. In France, it was a 63.4% drop using the same metrics, while Sweden and the Netherlands registered a 46% and 42.5% drop, respectively.
On the other hand, the German Motor Transport Authority (KBA) reported a 60% drop in Tesla registrations.
Many observers wonder if anti-Musk sentiment is to blame for what is coming upon Tesla, or if it is the global slowdown in sales that has affected the entire industry. Bumper stickers with phrases like “I bought this before Elon was crazy” are becoming common.
Meanwhile, the current Tesla owners also try to distance themselves from their company’s CEO.
