*David Blake Jr., the son of veteran rapper DJ Quik, is headed to prison after receiving a 15-years-to-life sentence for a fatal shooting that took place in Downey, California in 2022.
We reported earlier that the 31-year-old was convicted on December 4 of second-degree murder in connection with the death of Julio Moises Cardoza Jr. According to All Hip Hop, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Laura Walton handed down the sentence last week while also choosing to dismiss gun enhancement allegations that carried the potential to significantly increase his time behind bars.
At the time of the shooting, Blake was employed as a liaison to then-Compton City Councilman Isaac Galvan. On May 25, 2022, he drove Galvan to the Cardoza residence, where a dispute between Galvan and people inside the home turned volatile. Blake fired multiple rounds from inside his vehicle, later claiming he acted out of fear after seeing a shotgun aimed in his direction. Cardoza did not survive his wounds, dying at the hospital on the same day as the shooting. Blake was taken into custody the following day in Porter Ranch.
During sentencing, Blake addressed the court directly. “I’m sorry for the role I had in Julio Moises Cardoza Jr.’s death and my heart aches for the Cardozas,” he said. “I was truly in fear for my life and believed I was going to die.”
DJ Quik addressed the verdict in a video statement posted online in December. “I’m disappointed that I didn’t get in front of that story and share the sentencing with my son,” he said. “The reality of all of this is that two families are irrevocably changed forever.”
Blake had no prior criminal history and his legal team sought a lesser charge on his behalf. He becomes eligible for parole consideration after completing his minimum sentence.
