*Disgraced music mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs has responded to Shyne’s claims that he was the “fall guy” in their 1999 nightclub shooting involving Jenifer Lopez.
We reported earlier that one of the shooting victims, Natania Reuben, has for years asserted that it was Diddy, not Shyne, who shot her during an altercation between the rap mogul and Club New York patron Matthew Allen, resulting in injuries to three individuals, including herself. Lopez was arrested and released, while Diddy was acquitted of all charges. Shyne, however, served an eight-year prison sentence. In 2011, Combs settled civil suits with the victims, paying over $2.3 million.
Shyne unpacks the controversial case that put him behind bars for nearly a decade in a new Hulu documentary, “The Honorable Shyne.” The synopsis for the project reads: “His journey is one of redemption, resilience, and transformation. This documentary provides an intimate look at Shyne’s personal evolution as he navigates fame, incarceration and a return home to Belize, where he finds new purpose and strives to lead his country to a brighter future.”
In the trailer, the rapper-turned-politician says, “I was absolutely set up to be the fall guy” for the crime.
“I spent 10 years in prison, but I was able to move on,” Shyne (born Jamal Barrow) explains in the clip. “There’s a time to pivot, there’s a time to transition.”
Shyne says he thought Diddy was the devil and claims Diddy’s offensive contributions over the last 20 years and refusal to pay reparations caused their relationship to break down.

Diddy’s legal team slammed his claims. A rep for the Bad Boy Records founder tells TMZ Hip Hop … “Mr. Combs categorically denies Mr. Barrow’s allegations, including any suggestion that he orchestrated Mr. Barrow to ‘take the fall’ or ‘sacrificed’ him by directing witnesses to testify against him. These claims are unequivocally false.”
The spokesperson continued, “Mr. Combs was acquitted of all charges related to the 1999 Club New York incident and has consistently maintained his innocence. He cannot accept or condone any characterization of his actions as ‘demonic’ or ‘malicious.'”
The rep also said … “Mr. Combs appreciates the path Mr. Barrow has pursued and wishes him continued success. It is unfortunate that Mr. Barrow has chosen to revisit these allegations. Mr. Combs trusts that responsible journalism will weigh both the established legal outcomes and Mr. Combs’ positive, longstanding support for those he has worked with.”
Meanwhile, Funk Flex threatened to expose Shyne for allegedly lying about the circumstances surrounding his involvement in the Diddy nightclub shooting.
“When somebody tries to say they the scapegoat or they was used… it’s been bothering me,” said Flex during a recent on-air rant. “And I’m gonna keep it a buck. Shyne, I love you bro, and I know what you’ve been though—no I don’t—but you’re a liar. You’re a stone-cold faced liar, Shyne.”
According to Flex, Shyne pulled the trigger during the nightclub shooting. “Let me tell you about that night in that club. I don’t know what people are talking about Shyne was the streets. He was a punk. So all of that street talk. You don’t ever come my way with that. Puff had to keep people off of you from beating you to death. Had to keep D Rock from strangling you, Shyne,” Flex recounted.
“Let me tell you something, New York, about Shyne that night in that club. He knew exactly who those guys were that he got into a situation. It was his situation, not anybody else’s,” he continued. “This ain’t about Puff, It’s about the Notorious B.I.G. and you sounding like him and you trying to act like you were in demand and you was somebody. You a punk, and you shot that gun off that night because you was scared.”
As Flex explained, Shyne owed the group money for studio time and was so afraid of them that he pulled out his gun and started shooting.
“The Honorable Shyne” debuts on Hulu on November 18. Watch the trailer below.
