*Denzel Washington isn’t fazed by being overlooked for an Oscar nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category for “Gladiator II.”
Despite earning rave reviews and nominations from the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, his performance wasn’t recognized by the Academy. “Gladiator II” only received a single nomination for Best Costume Design. Washington, who has previously won two Oscars (Best Supporting Actor for “Glory” and Best Actor for “Training Day”), has also received numerous other nominations over the years, including six for Best Actor and one for Supporting Actor.
The Hollywood icon reacted to the Academy snubbing him for his “Gladiator II” performance in a new interview with The New York Times.
“I was sitting there smiling [on nomination morning], going: ‘Look at you. On the day you didn’t get a nomination for an Oscar, you’re working on Othello on Broadway,'” Washington recalled before sarcastically stating, “Are you kidding me? Awww. Oh, I’m so upset.”
“I’m happy for all that did, and I’m happy with what I’m doing,” Washington said. “Listen, I’ve been around too long. I’ve got — I don’t wanna say other fish to fry, but there’s a reality at this age. Going back to what I was saying: The beginning of wisdom is understanding. I’m getting wiser, working on talking less and learning to understand more — and that’s exciting.”

Meanwhile, the 97th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and will be televised live on ABC, streamed live on Hulu.
“Emilia Pérez,” a French-language musical about a transgender Mexican drug lord, leads the pack with 2025 Oscars with 13 nominations, including Best Picture. It will compete for the top honor alongside “Anora,” “The Brutalist,” “A Complete Unknown,” “Conclave,” “Dune: Part Two,” “I’m Still Here,” “Nickel Boys,” “The Substance,” and “Wicked.”
“Wicked” earned 10 nominations tied with “The Brutalist.” “Conclave” and “A Complete Unknown” each received eight nominations, while “Anora” secured six. “The Substance” earned five nods, including Demi Moore’s first Oscar nomination for acting.
