*A wave of audacity swept through Chicago’s West Side on Friday (10-11-24), as crowds of thieves descended upon stalled freight train cars, looting whatever they could grab.
The shocking incident unfolded on the Union Pacific train tracks between Kinzie and Lake streets, where the train was parked near the Cicero Avenue overpass, extending for several blocks according to CBS News Chicago.
Witnesses reported seeing numerous individuals climbing the embankment to access the train, with videos capturing scenes of people stealing large items such as televisions, electronics, and even air fryers during the hours-long looting spree.
“In all my years living on the West Side, I’ve never seen a freight train parked over a viaduct with people actually going into it,” said resident Princess Shaw, who observed the theft from her car.
Reports indicated that the looting began in the afternoon and continued unabated, with many individuals loading stolen goods onto the tops of waiting vehicles.
Shaw documented the spectacle and promptly called 911, only to learn that several other calls about the incident had already flooded the dispatch center.
“I gave 911 a call. I’m talking to dispatch,” she said. “They’re like, ‘You’re not the only call that’s been made. We’ve had several calls. We’re waiting for a car to be dispatched.'”
Despite the urgency of the situation, police sources remarked on a troubling delay. The Chicago Police Department reportedly waited over an hour for Union Pacific’s officers to arrive and secure the tracks, allowing looters ample time to ransack the train cars. Eyewitness videos showed a theft taking place right in front of a Chicago Police cruiser, with some thieves brazenly lowering stolen goods from the tracks despite the squad car’s lights and sirens being activated.

As the situation unfolded, footage captured police arriving with guns drawn in an attempt to apprehend the thieves. At least four people have since been taken into custody, and a police investigation is ongoing. While law enforcement succeeded in making some arrests, the sheer number of looters left many questioning how prepared authorities are to handle such brazen thefts.
A spokesperson for Union Pacific confirmed that the train was temporarily halted while awaiting an interchange with a partner railroad when the looting began. Unfortunately, this incident reflects a worrying trend in cargo thefts, raising concerns about safety and preparedness for similar events in the future.
As the Chicago community reflects on this unprecedented event, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by urban areas and the need for effective security measures to curb repeat occurrences of such brazen criminal activity.
