*Beyoncé and Jay-Z are set to compete head-to-head at the 2025 Emmy Awards in the outstanding variety special (live) category.
Beyoncé’s nomination stems from her historic “Beyoncé Bowl” halftime performance during the NFL’s Christmas Day game on Netflix, per THR. Jay-Z, listed as Shawn Carter, earned his nod as an executive producer for Kendrick Lamar’s Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show, which captivated over 133 million viewers. Their nominations underscore their monumental impact on music and television.
The category is stacked with contenders, including “SNL50: The Homecoming Concert,” “SNL50: The Anniversary Special,” and the Oscars. Beyoncé also secured a nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special for the “Beyoncé Bowl,” alongside co-director Alex Rudzinski, her third in this category, following nods for “Lemonade” in 2016 and “Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé” in 2019. Kendrick Lamar and Tony Russell were recognized for outstanding music direction for the Super Bowl show.
Choreography nominations further highlighted both performances, with Charm La’Donna earning nods for her work on Beyoncé’s and Lamar’s halftime shows in the outstanding choreography for variety or reality programming category. Tyrik Patterson, Christopher Grant, and Parris Goebel also received recognition for the “Beyoncé Bowl” choreography.
Questlove added to the music category nods with nominations for directing “Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music” and the documentary “Sly Lives! (Aka The Burden of Black Genius).”
