*“Mufasa: The Lion King” director Barry Jenkins and film composer Lin-Manuel Miranda chat about imposter syndrome, soundtracks, and Blue Ivy Carter!
BJ: [One thing I love about this] story is Blue Ivy’s character, Kiara. Kiara, to me, is a stand-in for the audience, a stand-in for your sons [Miranda]. And she’s saying to Rafiki I can’t be brave like Mufasa.
We’re watching the film to learn, ‘Yes we can.’ Mufasa didn’t know everything. He had to learn all these different things. So she won’t have to have the same doubts and insecurities he had.
LMM: That’s one of the things that was so extraordinary…reading the script I was like, ‘we think of Mufasa and we think of the greatest dad ever embodied by James Earl Jones, giving us advice from the clouds and the stars. And then you see this movie and you go, ‘Oh, he didn’t always have it all together!’ Those are all hard-won lessons. It makes folks who are asking those questions feel less alone.

Q: Speaking of Blue Ivy, did her mom [Beyonce] have any notes for either of you?
BJ: No, she was so kind to me and Blue Ivy in the process. She created the space for Blue to do her thing and when there were moments where there was something I was trying to communicate to Blue because she’s her mom, she would step in and she would communicate with them in the language they share. It was lovely to see!
