*This is a follow-up to our previous report on the death of Miami influencer Ashlee Jenae in Tanzania. New official statements have been released by Zanzibar police, and the family continues to reject the suicide narrative.
Official Police Account: Suicide Ruled
According to the latest statements from Zanzibar police, North Unguja Police Commander Benedict Mapujira confirmed on April 13 (2026), that authorities have ruled Ashlee Jenae’s death a suicide.
Jenae – real name Ashly Robinson, 31 – was on a birthday trip in Zanzibar with her fiancé Joe McCann (also referred to as Jon McCann in some reports). Police state that the couple had a “misunderstanding” or argument. Hotel management then placed them in separate rooms.
It was then, authorities allege, that Jenae hanged herself inside a wardrobe using a piece of cloth from her dress. She was found unconscious at a luxury resort (reports mention Zuri Zanzibar) and rushed to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead hours later.
Police have ruled out foul play. McCann is not detained and is not under investigation as a suspect.

Family and Friends Reject the Ruling
Despite the official statement, Jenae’s family and close friends – including PR executive Savannah Britt – have publicly rejected the suicide conclusion. They call the circumstances “suspicious” and are demanding a full, transparent investigation.
Their case mirrors what we reported previously. Jenae had just celebrated her 31st birthday (around April 5) and gotten engaged to McCann during a safari earlier in the trip. She posted happy, vibrant content showing no signs of distress. Those closest to her describe her as full of life, with plans for the future, and insist she “would never commit suicide.”
The family released a statement noting they are cooperating with Zanzibar officials but have “many questions” and view it as a “suspicious passing.” An active investigation is ongoing.
Where Things Stand: Autopsy, Skepticism, and Viral Outrage
No public autopsy or toxicology results have been released yet by Tanzanian authorities. That absence has fueled online speculation, conspiracy theories (including unverified claims of strangulation or staging), and calls for justice under the hashtag #JusticeForAshleeJenae.
Some reports note inconsistencies in early timelines or locations – resort names, when she was found, and other details that don’t fully align. As we noted in our initial report, some close to Jenae initially claimed she was found hanging from a tree, not inside a wardrobe.
The case has gone viral again following the police announcement. High-profile figures including Cardi B have expressed doubt about the suicide narrative, given the joyful context of the trip – a fresh engagement and a birthday celebration.
As of April 13, 2026, the investigation continues. U.S. authorities have not issued detailed public comments.

A Developing Story with Two Narratives
This remains a case of sharply conflicting accounts. Official police conclusion points to suicide after an argument and separation. Her loved ones strongly dispute that and seek clearer answers through proper forensic process.
Sudden deaths abroad, especially involving foreigners, often face scrutiny over local investigation quality, cultural differences, and potential biases. Tragic either way – a young woman who appeared to be living her “soft life” dream cut short.
If more details emerge from an autopsy or toxicology report, the picture could shift. Her family is working directly with officials for clarity. We will continue to update this story as information becomes available.
