*Some celebrities know how to keep calm and smile when disappointed. Not so with Angela Bassett. She was so convinced she was the most “deserving” of the Best Supporting Actress Oscar that she was openly disappointed and bewildered when it was handed to someone else.
In 2023, Basset was nominated for her supporting role in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” When the time for the announcement came, she heard not her name but Jamie Lee Curtis. He had also been nominated for his supporting role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”
Basset was visibly upset. She didn’t attempt to hide it, not even from the cameras. She recently spoke to “Town & Country magazine” on the subject. She is not wholly over her disappointment.
Reacting to those unhappy with her open display of disappointment, she said, “I found it interesting that I wouldn’t be allowed to be disappointed at an outcome where I thought I was deserving.”

She added that while she usually loves applauding people, at that moment, she felt she shouldn’t because she had invested her time and energy in qualifying for the award.
“I love applauding people,” she explained. “But in that moment … No, I have put in: put in the time, put in good work over time. I didn’t think that was a gift. I thought it was a given.”
Basset must have been convinced she would be the winner after she earned critical acclaim for her performance in the movie, which was the “Black Panther” sequel. She must also have encouraged herself with the fact that she was the first actor to be Oscar-nominated for a Marvel movie. What could go wrong? She was there with her children, waiting for her name to be called. This was her second Oscar nomination. The first was in 1994. She hoped to win this time.
Last year, she spoke to Oprah about the same loss.
“I was gobsmacked! I was,” she told Oprah. “I thought I handled it very well. That was my intention, to handle it very well. It was, of course, a supreme disappointment, and disappointment is human. So I thought, yes, I was disappointed and I handled it like a human being.”

Let’s wait to see who she will speak to next on this. There seems to be more coming off her chest.
