*Amazon’s AI-enhanced assistant, Alexa+, is now being rolled out nationwide, with users receiving the upgrade automatically as the trial phase comes to an end.
The enhanced assistant marks a major change in how Amazon’s voice technology works. Alexa+ offers more natural, conversational exchanges and can manage more complex requests, operating more like an AI chatbot than a traditional command-based assistant. On Echo Show devices, conversations now appear as text chats resembling ChatGPT’s interface.
As Wired reports, one of the most noticeable changes involves the assistant’s default voice, which some have likened to a “sassy teen.” While reverting to the earlier voice option remains available, even that previous version has undergone its own changes.

The new browser functionality positions Amazon to compete directly with ChatGPT by offering a unified AI experience across Alexa-enabled devices, Alexa.com, and the Alexa app. Prime members get access to these expanded features at no additional cost.
“Alexa+ is significantly more capable than the original Alexa, so we’re working to make it available to as many customers as possible,” said an Amazon spokesperson. “We notified customers of the upcoming update, including how to return to the original version.”
Prime members can activate the AI-powered voice assistant by saying “Alexa, upgrade to Alexa+” or by signing into their Amazon account at Alexa.com. Non-Prime subscribers must pay $19.99 per month to access the service.
