
*Production has started on Netflix’s highly anticipated “A Different World” sequel, with returning stars and fresh faces set to bring a new generation of Hillman College students to life.
As Deadline reports, among the returning cast are Charnele Brown reprising her role as Kimberly Reese and Jenifer Lewis as Dorothy Dandridge Davenport. They join an ensemble that includes original cast members Kadeem Hardison as Dwayne Wayne, Jasmine Guy as Whitley Gilbert-Wayne, Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson, and Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks.
The sequel also introduces several new characters. Maleah Joi Moon plays Deborah, the daughter of Dwayne and Whitley, who begins her freshman year at Hillman and begins charting her own path. Other new additions include Alijah Kai Haggins as Rashida, Cornell Young as Shaquille, Kennedi Reece as Hazel, Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir, and Chibuikem Uche as Kojo.

Additional newcomers are Vincent Jamal Hooper as Ellington, Elijah J. Roberts as Jalen, Renee Harrison as Candace, Famecia Ward as Nellie Gaines, and Dasan Frazier as Xavier. Netflix has ordered a 10-episode season, with filming already in progress in Atlanta.
The creative team is led by showrunner and executive producer Felicia Pride, who expressed excitement about reimagining the beloved series for longtime fans and new audiences alike. “It is such an honor to be a part of bringing back this iconic show, one that I grew up on and which had a profound impact on my life. I am so proud of the work we’re doing to reimagine A Different World for beloved fans and new generations alike,” she stated.
Ashley Laverne Jackson, daughter of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, joins as a staff writer and described the opportunity as “truly my dream job.”
Returning executive producer Debbie Allen will direct three episodes, including the premiere. Allen emphasized the series’ lasting impact, noting that the original show tripled enrollment at historically Black colleges and provided a strong platform for young Black audiences.
“There couldn’t be a better time than now to reboot A Different World,” Allen shared with Tudum. “Our show changed lives, tripled the enrollment of historically black colleges and gave a strong voice and platform for Young Black America.”
With a mix of returning favorites, new talent, and a creative team connected to Hillman’s legacy, Netflix’s “A Different World” sequel is set to continue the story of Hillman College for both old fans and a new generation.
