According to Jaramilla, the officer’s conduct was completely unwarranted and reflected systemic issues within the department.
“Erin was handcuffed and defenseless when she was slammed to the ground,” Jaramilla said. “This is not just about one officer. It’s about a department culture that permits this kind of brutality to exist.”
The family will speak out at a press conference scheduled for today (05-25-25) at 1pm directly outside the San Bernardino Police Station located at 710 N. D Street, San Bernardino, CA 92410. They will be joined by civil rights leaders and community members demanding accountability and transparency.
Community Leaders Demand Attorney General Rob Bonta Act
Ali and Jaramilla are urging California Attorney General Rob Bonta to step in and conduct an independent investigation into the officer’s actions and the broader practices of the San Bernardino Police Department. They say local investigations often lack transparency and fail to hold officers accountable, particularly in cases involving African American victims.
“We’ve seen this before in San Bernardino,” said Ali. “We’re not just talking about a single case—we’re talking about a pattern of violence, intimidation, and racism. The Attorney General must take this case out of the hands of local officials who’ve shown time and time again that they can’t be trusted to police themselves.”
The video shows a disturbing use of force and has triggered comparisons to other high-profile incidents of police brutality involving Black youth. Many civil rights advocates are calling Erin’s case a potential flashpoint for renewed protests against police misconduct in California.
