*The “Black Panther” spinoff series centered on Danai Gurira’s character Okoye is no longer in development.
Marvel’s head of streaming, Brad Winderbaum, confirmed that the project, which was first discussed in 2021, has been officially scrapped.
“I think fans of Okoye are going to be excited to see her come back, but I don’t think it’s going to be in a television show,” Winderbaum said to Pay or Wait. “I can’t say where and when, but I think there’s a lot to look forward to.”
Gurira previosuyly hinted that a spin-off series was in the works for Okoye. In the blockbuster Marvel movie, Okoye steers an army of female soldiers called the Dora Milaje. The group also stands guard over the royal family. After the first installment of “Black Panther,” Okoye appeared in “Avengers: Infinity War, “Avengers: Endgame” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
“I have been told that I can gently allude to this possibility. Just gently,” said Gurira of the series in a 2023 appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

In related news, Disney has set a release date for “Eyes of Wakanda,” the animated “Black Panther” spinoff created by Todd Harris for the streaming service Disney+.
The upcoming miniseries will span various time zones, following a diverse range of characters searching for dangerous vibranium artifacts. Here’s the logline: “Throughout Wakandan history, brave warriors have been tasked to travel the world retrieving dangerous vibranium artifacts. This is their story.”
“Eyes of Wakanda is an MCU show,” Winderbaum told ComicBook. “This is the history of Wakanda as told through the War Dogs, and it is some of the best animation we’ve ever done. Todd Harris is the creator of that one. That’s just such a cool show.”
The four-episode series features the voices of Winnie Harlow, Cress Williams, Patricia Belcher, Larry Herron, Adam Gold, Lynn Whitfield, Jacques Colimon, Jona Xiao, Isaac Robinson-Smith, Gary Anthony Williams, Zeke Alton, Steve Toussaint, and Anika Noni Rose.
“Eyes of Wakanda” is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on August 6.
