*Ice Cube’s Big3 basketball league has graduated to a new level, with the rap icon signing NBA legend Dwight Howard.
Cube broke the acquisition via Instagram on April 9, stating Howard, an eight-time NBA All-Star agreed to join the Big3 for one final season as a professional basketball player, according to Vibe. Howard will suit up as a member of the Los Angeles Riot.
The athlete’s inclusion into the Big3 comes as the league shifts to a city-based model. Welcoming Howard into the fold, Cube touted the player’s legacy and love for basketball, saying, “On behalf of the entire league, I want to be the first one to welcome Dwight Howard to the BIG3. His legacy speaks for itself, and he still has fun playing the game.”
“I’m excited and can’t wait to show off the other aspects of my game that I didn’t get to show in the NBA while also helping to expand the league globally,” Howard said in a statement regarding the opportunity to showcase another side of his competitive abilities.
Like many basketball fans, Cube realizes Howard’s untapped potential with working to bring his skills fully to the table. In Cube’s eyes, the 39-year-old basketball great’s athleticism, size and shared desire to grow the game of basketball around the world make him “a perfect fit” for the Big3.

“We all know that Dwight Howard can do more on the basketball court than he was able to show in the NBA. So, it’s going to be nice to see him open up his game and show his all-around skills on the court in the BIG3,” he commented
“He’s a perfect fit for the league, not just because of his athleticism and size but also due to our shared desire to grow the game of basketball around the world. We are honored that he has chosen to bring his game and star power to the BIG3. I look forward to seeing him challenge our three-on-three stars this summer and see if he can win himself another championship.”
Howard’s entry into the Big3 makes him the latest in a string of NBA legends to grace the Big3, joining Allen Iverson, Joe Johnson, and Amar’e Stoudemire, who have previously played in the league. Howard’s time in the Riot will be heightened due to him working with a roster of talented former NBA stars like co-captain Jordan Crawford and team coach, ex-Laker Nick “Swaggy P” Young.
Overall, Howard mentioned the chance to write the next chapter in his basketball life after his induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
“I’m excited to join Ice Cube and the BIG3 — especially right after being inducted into the basketball Hall of Fame,” he shared. “Words can’t describe how grateful I am for these opportunities. I can’t wait to join the L.A. Riot and try to bring another championship to the city of L.A.”
