*Love may be a many splendored thing. But it is taking a mysterious tone with the death of a homeless advocate at the hands of the man she tried to help. Chad Irish, who is wheelchair-bound, is accused of shooting 31-year-old Yazmeen Williams in the head and dumping her body in a trash bag on a sidewalk in Kips Bay on July 5. He is charged with concealment of a corpse.
Williams, a known activist in the community, was loved by many, who were not shy in showing Irish personally how they felt about felt her. Sandra Rose noted how news of her death quickly spread through her neighborhood.
In addition, the site detailed a viral video that shows Irish catching the wrath of a mob that attacked him on July 1 as he was on a gurney.
Despite efforts from medics and police to hold the angry mob back, some men landed punches as Irish was loaded into an ambulance. In addition, police removed the 55-year-old’s wheelchair and dog from his apartment.
“Several people from the neighborhood were quite angry with Mr. Irish over this incident and they surrounded him and he produced a pistol and menaced them,” NYPD Chief of Detective Joseph Kenny said on July 2. “He then fled the location back to his apartment, where he was placed under arrest by detectives and patrol.”
Released surveillance video captures Irish in a motorized wheelchair dragging Williams’ body down a street. The suspect’s apartment contained evidence including signs of the black trash bag the sleeping bag was wrapped in coming from his apartment.
At this time, authorities are still investigating the incident and whether Irish is the killer.
“I don’t know if this is the actual killer … But how inhumane. You’re dragging down the block somebody’s daughter. He should be lucky the police got him before that community,” Mayor Eric Adams said at a press conference.
Covering the incident CBS New York spoke with a friend of Williams who shed light on if Irish and Williams dated or if Williams was just living with him.
“Not necessarily, but I know he would bring heed. She was energetic. She knew people around the neighborhood, so she was very loving, so it’s pretty sad,” he added.
Observant neighbors weighed on Irish’s relationship with Williams, telling CBS New York that she stayed with Irish before going M.I.A.
When one neighbor confronted him over him dragging the trash bag behind his wheelchair. Irish stated the bag was full of dirty laundry.
Irish’s newfound legal situation falls in line with his history of bad behavior that features nearly two dozen prior arrests as well as two prison stints for robbery and assault in the Bronx.
Murder charges are pending in the case as Irish is currently in jail without bond.
