*President-elect Donald Trump vows to “close” the U.S. Department of Education and has said education policy needs to be transferred “back to the states.”

“We want federal education dollars to follow the student, rather than propping up a bloated and radical bureaucracy in Washington, D.C.,” Trump said in October. “We want to close the federal Department of Education.”

In a recent video, Trump outlined his 10 “key ideas” aimed at reforming America’s education system. His agenda includes initiatives such as reintroducing prayer in public schools and eliminating curricula that encourage students to “hate their country,” The Grio reports.

Trump also noted that “very early” in his second administration, he would send “all education and education work and needs back to the States.”

“We want them to run the education of our children because they’ll do a much better job of it,” Trump added.

The 45th president said of the federal Department of Education, “You can’t do worse. We spend more money per pupil by three times than any other nation, and yet we’re absolutely at the bottom.”

In another video, Trump stated he would instruct the Department of Justice to take action against diversity, equity, and inclusion programs (DEI) and “pursue federal civil rights cases against schools that continue to engage in racial discrimination and schools that persist in explicit unlawful discrimination under the guise of equity.”

Trump also announced plans to impose taxes and fines on schools that engage in DEI initiatives. He proposed using a  “portion of the seized funds will then be used as restitution for victims of these illegal and unjust policies, policies that hurt our country so badly.”

President Trump does not specify who he considers “victims,” though some commentators suggest his focus may be on white families.
