*Terrell Davis and his wife Tamiko Nash appeared on Good Morning America on Wednesday (July 17) to speak out about him being handcuffed in front of their kids and escorted off a recent United flight.
As we reported earlier, in an Instagram post, the former Denver Broncos running back explained that he was traveling from Denver to John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California, with his wife and three children. When his son asked for a cup of ice during beverage service, the flight attendant didn’t respond.
Davis said he “calmly reached behind me and lightly tapped his arm.” The attendant shouted, “Don’t hit me,” and left the beverage cart to “hurriedly approach the front of the plane,” the two-time Super Bowl champion wrote.
“I was confused, as were passengers in front of me who witnessed the exchange,” Davis added.
Upon landing, the pilot requested that all passengers remain seated. Six FBI and law enforcement agents then boarded the plane and handcuffed Davis.
“I was then removed from the flight while being recorded by multiple passengers as I was paraded off of the plane in handcuffs by the officers,” Davis shared on IG. “I was − and remain − humiliated, embarrassed, powerless and angry.”
He was questioned by authorities who determined that “this flight attendant was inaccurate in his accusations and the agents profusely apologized even offering to support me and my family in any way possible,” Davis added.
PEOPLE reports that during the GMA interview, Nash was visibly emotional as she recalled the impact on their children.
“Don’t fight it,” Terrell remembers the agent telling him when the FBI handcuffed him while he was “still seated.”
“I thought it was a joke, because what else could it be? I saw the agents come on so of course it caught my attention like everyone else,” Nash said. “And they just walked straight up to Terell. So I jumped out of my seat and I said, ‘Wait a minute, what’s going on?’ I hopped over to the woman next to me and I said to Terrell, ‘Are you joking?’”
Nash continued, “I’m looking at my sons who are sitting right next to him watching their dad being handcuffed. And what could we do? And I’m asking them what is going on. Why are you doing this?” No one helped me. We were just left to fend for ourselves on the flight while everyone’s staring at us.”
Davis said he felt “demoralized” and “embarrassed, humiliated.”
“I felt like my dignity was stripped from me right in front of my children and my family. And I want United to be held accountable,” he added.
According to Davis’ attorney, United has not contacted Terrell with a personal apology. The airline issued a statement saying that the flight attendant involved in the incident was removed from duty pending a review of the situation.
“This is clearly not the kind of travel experience we strive to provide, and we have reached out to Mr. Davis’s team to apologize,” United Airlines said.
