According to PEOPLE, the horrific incident was captured on home surveillance footage. The video allegedly shows the girl using bedding to suffocate her cousin, identified by family members as Demeria Hollingsworth, who was sleeping on the top bunk of their shared bed. Following the act, the suspect, whose name has not been released, cleaned up the scene and repositioned Demeria’s body.
According to Humboldt County, Tenn., District Attorney Frederick Agee, the girl has been charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence.
“This is one of the most disturbing violent acts my office has prosecuted, whether committed by an adult or a juvenile,” Agee said in a statement.
Prosecutors are aiming to charge the 12-year-old as an adult.
“[Demeria] loved reading books, swimming, playing outside, riding her bike every day, and playing with the neighborhood kids and my friends’ children,” the girl’s mother told WREG. “She was sweet.”
Demeria’s mother started a GoFundMe campaign that states:
I’m Rayy. I just lost my baby, the most beautiful child of God on Monday, July 15th. The pain I’m feeling is unbearable. I have to now live life without her in this crazy world. But I have another child who’s depending on me, and I have to be strong for my baby because she lost her big sister also. I never imagined anything like this would happen and now find myself trying to fund a funeral. Anything that you can contributed is greatly appreciated and will go towards the service. Thank you so much for all your love, prayers, and donations.
At the time of this report, the campaign has raised over $16,000.
