Three Little Birds

*”Three Little Birds” is a captivating and poignant drama series created by UK National Treasure, actor, comic legend, and co-founder of Comic Relief, Sir Lenny Henry.

The contemporary historical drama revolves around the lives of three diverse protagonists, each facing unique challenges, and how their paths intertwine unexpectedly, per the news release.

The series is inspired by the stories of Henry’s mother and aunties. This 1950s-set drama captures the resilience and sacrifices of previous generations and their extraordinary voyage from Jamaica to Great Britain during the Windrush migration.

“Three Little Birds” stars Rochelle Neil (Amazon’s Das Boot, HBO’s The Never’s) as Leah; Saffron Coomber (Steve McQueen’s Small Axe) as Chantrelle and Yazmin Belo, making her screen debut as Hosanna. The supporting cast includes Javone Prince, Bobby Gordon, Arthur Darvill, Tierney Turner, and Malachi Hall. Watch the trailer below.

Following its highly acclaimed UK debut, the show arrives in thr US on Thursday, February 1st. Stream the first three episodes on BritBox, with the final three released a week later.

Here’s the official synopsis: Three Little Birds narrates the adventures of gregarious sisters Leah and Chantrelle, who hail from the St Anne’s district of Jamaica, and their virtuous, bible-loving acquaintance Hosanna, as they board a ship heading for a new life in Great Britain. Written by Sir Lenny Henry (Chef!, Broadchurch, The Long Song), this life-affirming six-part drama is inspired by Henry’s mother’s stories of leaving Jamaica in the 1950’s for Great Britain, which became her lifelong home and where she raised her family.

Henry hopes the characters’ plight will move viewers.

“If you’re from somewhere and you’re in trouble, and you have to leave – you go somewhere else to survive, to raise your family, to have a better life. Surely everybody can relate to that?” Henry told The Independent in a 2023 interview.

Neil added, “In the UK, we do period dramas really well, but they’re Downton Abbey, or Call the Midwife – it looks a certain way. It gets to the point that when you travel, you get people who’ll say, ‘You’re not British,’ because all they see on TV is that British history. It feels amazing to think that there’s a British period drama that’ll have us included.”

The series delicately explores the personal stories of its characters, featuring a cast that delivers stellar performances, conveying the nuances of joy, pain, and determination that define the lives of the women who undertake a transformative journey.
