*Vice President Kamala Harris, for better or worse, has impacted Netflix. The streamer experienced its highest day of cancellations this year, due to its co-founder Reed Hastings’ $7 million donation to Harris’ campaign to become President, Fox News reports.
Five days after Hastings’ contribution to a super PAC supporting Harris’ bid for the presidency, Bloomberg referenced the researcher Antenna in a report centering on Netflix’s cancelation almost tripling in the United States
Among those backing away from the platform are former President Donald Trump supporters who called on conservatives to cancel their subscriptions after Hastings endorsed Harris on X and revealed how much he donated to her campaign in July.
According to Bloomberg, that same month they resulted in Netflix customers reportedly canceling their subscriptions at a higher rate than any month since February 2024. Shifting away from the politics, the streamer chalked up the cancellation surge to a reaction to it phasing out its lowest-cost choice.
“But the five-day period after Hastings’ endorsement was unusual, even for July,” the Bloomberg article mentioned, noting that July 26 marked the single worst day for Netflix cancellations this year. News of Hastings’ hefty donation for Harris was revealed three days prior.
Hastings, a longtime Democratic donor, is among notable movers and shakers who called on President Joe Biden to step down this summer after what many considered to be a horrible debate performance against Trump in June.
“Biden needs to step aside to allow a vigorous Democratic leader to beat Trump and keep us safe and prosperous,” Hastings wrote in an email obtained by the New York Times.
Hastings, along with his wife Patty Quillin, have supplied notable donations over the years to the Democratic Party. In California, the couple has made their impact known, by donating approximately $3 million to a committee created to stop a recall effort against Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2021. Quillin, in particular, was among those in 2022 who donated funds to a left-wing group hoping to stop liberal San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin from being recalled himself, Fox News noted.
As it stands now, the impact of the Harris endorsement to Netflix beyond the five-day cancellation spike is unclear. Stay tuned to the outlet’s next financial report, which will be released in October, to see what happens next
