*Michael C. Hall is set to headline Showtime/Paramount+’s forthcoming “Dexter” sequel series, “Dexter: Resurrection.”
This new series will pick up where “Dexter: New Blood,” left off. However, curious fans are wondering how the story will continue, considering the 2022 finale appeared to show the infamous serial killer meeting his end in the freezing cold.
“Dexter” aired on Showtime from 2006 to 2013, with the limited series “Dexter: New Blood” picking up 10 years later, airing one season from 2021 to 2022.
“Dexter: Resurrection” will debut in Summer 2025, picking up “right where we left off,” Hall said, Variety reports, noting that the show could expand into multiple seasons.
According to the press release, the previously announced origin story “Dexter: Original Sin” premieres in December 2024, and “Dexter: Resurrection” launches Summer of 2025.
Hall will return as Dexter Morgan in both series. He will star in “Dexter: Resurrection” set in the present day and narrate the inner voice of a young Dexter (played by Patrick Gibson) in “Dexter: Original Sin” which takes place in the 90s.

“We are thrilled to have the brilliant Michael C. Hall reprise his iconic role as Dexter Morgan in Showtime’s most successful series ever,” said Chris McCarthy, Paramount Global Co-CEO and President/CEO, Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios. “While Dexter: Resurrection will appeal to the tens of millions of longtime fans, Dexter: Original Sin will introduce a whole new generation of viewers into this iconic series by starting from the beginning, which is sure to satisfy existing audiences as well.”
“Dexter” was the #1 Showtime original and since the end of its run, has captured millions of fans and become a cult classic. Over time, it has built a rabid and loyal fan base in the tens of millions. The series has had a recent resurgence, with 1.48 billion viewing minutes across all platforms, per Variety.
“It’s unbelievable,” Hall told Variety of the popularity. “There’s something about this world, something about this character that captivates people.”
He added, “It’s hard to say. I think there’s many different ways this show appeals to people as there are people who watch it. But I think maybe a biding thing is, in a world in which we feel a sense of being out of control people like spending time with a character who’s taking his own, unique control of his little corner of the world,” Hall explained.
“I think we all have our shadow side that we contend with and Dexter’s is obviously a little weightier than most. People enjoy spending time with someone who is doing his best to take responsibility for that side in his sort of outside-the-box way and morally grey way. People, I think, relish the invitation to identify with someone who is contending with this much darkness, and maybe contending with it in a way that is arguably admirable – even though he’s doing what he’s doing.”
All previous seasons of “Dexter and Dexter: New Blood” are available for subscribers on Paramount+ with the Paramount+ with Showtime plan.
