*Lee Daniels reacted to the shock over a controversial scene involving Glenn Close in his new Netflix horror film “The Deliverance.”
The film is inspired by a true story and centers on Ebony Jackson (Andra Day), a struggling single mother fighting personal demons, who moves her family into a new home for a fresh start. But when strange occurrences inside the home raise the suspicions of Child Protective Services and threaten to tear the family apart, Ebony soon finds herself locked in a battle for her life and the souls of her children.
The movie reimagines the events described by Latoya Ammons and the demonic experiences in her family’s Indiana home in 2011. Indianapolis Star detailed her story in a 2014 article.
In the movie, Close’s character becomes possessed by a demon and one scene sees her sniff and say to her daughter: “I can smell your nappy p****y.”
One viewer shared the clip on social media, writing: “Lee Daniel’s you will pay for your crimes for having Glenn Close say this,” to which Daniels replied: “Had to do it.”
Speaking about Close’s role, the filmmaker wrote on X: “Every Black person knows an Alberta. She’s part of the fabric of our community, but we’ve never seen her on screen before. Thank you Glenn for bringing her magnificently to life.”
As we reported earlier, one user provocatively remarked, “This ni**a added a white woman to a true story that did not involve a white woman,” driving home the sentiment that his casting choices overshadow the true story, according to theJasmineBrand.
“The Deliverance,” which also stars Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor and Mo’Nique, is available to stream on Netflix and is currently the most-watched title on the platform.
