*Jamie Foxx filmed a new Netflix special where he disclosed the reason for his hospitalization in 2023 with a mysterious medical complication.
The event titled “What Had Happened Was,” described as “an unforgettable one-man show,” was filmed this month and features Foxx taking the stage “to share his journey through a serious health scare, filled with humor, heart, and inspiration,” according to his Instagram post.
“Experience Jamie Foxx like never before in this intimate and engaging performance, as he opens up about his struggles, triumphs, and everything in between,” the post reads. “Get ready for a night of laughter, reflection, and genuine connection.” Foxx’s one-man show was held on Oct. 3, 4, and 5 in Atlanta and filmed for a Netflix special titled “What Had Happened Was.”
“It was an excruciating time, opening those wounds every single day,” Foxx told CBS Mornings host Gayle King backstage at the taping of his special, referring to using his health crisis as material for the shows, Mens Journal reports.
“It was excruciating because the worry is what gets you,” he continued. “We’ve got a great show in the room, but we don’t know what they may laugh at or what they may not laugh at. Any comedian will tell you that’s the thing, the worry is the thing.”
The three-night special marked the first time Foxx performed material about his health scare for a live audience.
“Usually, when you do a stand-up special, you go out for a year and a half and work every nook and cranny, then you tape it. You don’t just show up in Atlanta and turn the camera on,” Foxx said.
In 2023, Foxx was hospitalized in Atlanta due to a “medical complication,” according to his daughter Corinne. After a month-long stay, he was discharged but has shared few details about the incident.
Speaking to King backstage at the taping of the Netflix special, Foxx called the experience “a personal journey,” adding, “I hope I never have to go through this again. My next jokes will start out, ‘Knock, knock!’”
Netflix has yet to announce a release date for “What Had Happened Was.”
