*We spoke to writer and director John Campbell about his award-winning docuseries “Who’s Behind Black Art,” which premiered on Comcast’s Black Experience on Xfinity. The four-part series spotlights five rising Black contemporary artists—Adrian Armstrong, Jewel Ham, Laurena Finéus, Mario Joyce, and Tae Ham—chronicling their journeys as they navigate the art world and prepare for a major exhibition at New York City’s World Trade Center.
Campbell’s series not only brings viewers into the minds and processes of these artists but also features insights from prominent voices across the art industry. Recently recognized with the “Best Series – Web” award at the 2024 Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival, Campbell said “Who’s Behind Black Art?” aims to inspire people to hit up their local art gallery.
“…we go to amusement parks, we go to concerts and so many other places, maybe go to a gallery, maybe go to a museum and see what some of these Black artists are doing,” Campbell told us. “It’s phenomenal when you get to be in front of a piece by someone who looks like you.I love the idea of people creating their own ideas. I want people to remain inspired so that we can achieve and do more and also be supportive and part of the community.”
In a statement, Loren Hudson, SVP and Chief Diversity Officer, Connectivity and Platforms, Comcast, said: “We are committed to creating spaces where representation truly matters, and featuring Who’s Behind Black Art exclusively on the Black Experience on Xfinity channel is just one of many ways we bring that vision to life,” said Loren Hudson, SVP and Chief Diversity Officer, Connectivity and Platforms, Comcast, said in a statement.
“We are thrilled to partner with writer and director John Campbell in sharing the stories of the five incredible artists featured in the film, on our platform, which highlights the diverse talents of creators and celebrates the richness of Black culture,” Hudson continued.
“Often the conversation about art focuses on world-renowned artists. Who’s Behind Black Art gives you early insight into the struggles, challenges and triumphs of five very different young artists with big hopes and dreams for their future,” Campbell added. “We are grateful to work on the release of this project with Comcast on their Black Experience on Xfinity channel, a partnership that afforded us the opportunity to give these talented artists a platform to share their art and importantly, their stories.”
