*In a shocking and heartbreaking case of neglect and loss, five individuals, including family members and home healthcare providers, have been arrested in connection with the tragic death of 7-year-old Deonte Atwell in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. According to authorities, Atwell was pronounced dead on Christmas Day 2023, having suffered from severe malnutrition and weighing just seven pounds.
Atwell’s family, with his mother Michelle Doe, 37; brother Tyreck Irvin, 21; and grandfather James Graham, 70, face serious charges including first-degree murder, aggravated manslaughter, and child neglect. The shocking discovery at Broward Health Medical Center has plunged the community into disbelief and mourning.
Court proceedings revealed the grim details of Atwell’s last days. Prosecutors reported that he was not only malnourished but had suffered neglect so severe that he had developed gaping wounds from bed sores, with bones visibly protruding through his skin. Autopsy results indicated that the boy had been starved to death over several months. Investigators found 264 unopened bottles of his feeding formula in the family home, raising grave questions about the caregivers’ actions.
In addition to the family members, two healthcare providers involved in Atwell’s care, Mirlande Moltimer Ameda, 47, and nurse Cassandre Lassegue, 33, have also been arrested. Moltimer, who owned Samaritin Home Care Provider, and Lassegue are charged with felony murder and Medicaid fraud, accused of billing the state for services never rendered. Prosecutors argued that had the boy received proper care, he would still be alive, reports WSVN.com.

The turmoil surrounding Atwell’s death is compounded by the fact that two other brothers, aged 9 and 16, were also living in the home. Doe and Irvin face charges related to neglecting these children as well. Both are currently being held without bond, while Graham is awaiting further legal proceedings after being granted a $22,000 bond and fitted with an ankle monitor.
Graham knew about the trouble Atwell was in and refused to say anything about it, authorities revealed.
Irvin also appeared in court on Wednesday.
“The defendant has admitted that he was the one changing the victim’s diaper in the days and weeks leading up to his death,” said prosecutors. “While this victim was enduring this prolonged starvation and severe medical neglect, the victim’s 9-year-old and 16-year-old brothers were in the home and sharing a bed and bedroom with the victim in the days and weeks leading up to his death.”
Witnesses report that the emotional turmoil surrounding the incident has stirred anger and profound sadness within the community.
During a 911 call made by Atwell’s uncle, a frantic plea for help was recorded, highlighting the desperation of the situation.
“My nephew is on a breathalyzer and he’s not responding too well right now,” he told the 911 operator, showcasing the desperate circumstances as the situation escalated.
Fort Lauderdale Police Det. Jacqueline Sanchez expressed her dismay over the case, stating, “It’s very disturbing. I can tell you, I lost sleep more than once.” The emotional toll of such neglect, especially from caregivers who were supposed to be providing care, weighs heavily on those involved in the investigation.
The arrest of the caregivers emphasizes the crackdown on fraud in Florida’s Medicaid system, where officials have determined that Atwell’s death occurred amid a scheme to defraud Medicaid, valued between
$10,000 and $50,000.

The allegations bring to light a broader discussion on the accountability of those in the healthcare system responsible for the welfare of vulnerable patients.
As the investigation continues, the community is left grappling with the loss of a young life, and the distressing realities of systemic failures within both family structures and healthcare systems are under scrutiny. Legal proceedings against the accused are expected to unfold in the coming weeks, as the justice system seeks to address the heartbreak of this tragic case and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
