‘Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé’ is #1 at the US Box Office – Brings in At Least $21 Million | VIDEO

*To all of Beyoncé‘s haters who were convinced that “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé” was gonna flop at the box office, we have one word for ya: WRONG! With $21 million in North American ticket sales, it landed in first place according to estimates from AMC Theatres.

Maybe they (the haters) thought/wished that because normally, the period after Thanksgiving and before Christmas is usually slow for films “Renaissance” was certain to fail.

However, “Renaissance” defied the odds. Not only that, it’s the first time a film has opened over $20 million on this weekend since “The Last Samurai” did it in 2013.

“Renaissance,” written, directed, and produced by Bey, didn’t fare all that well overseas, however. Internationally, it only earned $6.4 million from 2,621 theaters.

As expected, over 70 percent of “Renaissance” tickets sold (in the US) went to females. Additionally, 52 percent of the film’s patrons were Black. Nearly 70 percent of all ticket buyers were between ages 18 and 34, including 43 percent between ages 25 and 34, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“Beyoncé and Taylor Swift both chose to partner with AMC Theatres to distribute their concert films, instead of through a regular studio. Additionally, both superstars have been supportive of one another, making splashy appearances at the other’s premieres. Both had previously released films on Netflix (“Miss Americana” and “Homecoming”). Both are reported to be receiving at least 50% of ticket sales,” THR also noted.

“On behalf of AMC Theatres Distribution and the entire theatrical industry, we thank Beyoncé for bringing this incredible film directly to her fans,” said Elizabeth Frank, AMC Theatres executive vice president of worldwide programming, in a statement. “To see it resonate with fans and with film critics on a weekend that many in the industry typically neglect is a testament to her immense talent, not just as a performer, but as a producer and director.”
