*Webbies, we’re getting your whole life together with today’s Social Heat. We previously reported how Jilly from Philly sang down her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Jill Scott performed the new Black national anthem at the Essence Fest, a song she wrote at 19. The song lyrics are soul-stirring and mesmerized the Essence crowd with its deep-rooted truth and grief of our ancestors. The lyrics flow as such, “oh say can you see, by the blood in the streets, that this place doesn’t smile, on you colored child, whose blood built this land, with sweat and their hands but you’ll die in this place, and your memory erased, oh say does this truth hold any weight, this is not the land of the free, but the home of the slave[s].” Since SCOTUS ruled against affirmative action in higher ed institutions and the constant oppression Black Americans face each day when they step out their front door, the words from the socially conscious singer hit the audience differently.

Issa Rae is in her Issa season and Ebony magazine’s latest July cover girl.
