*Social Heat is a baddie today with some baddie stories. Essence Fest 2023 kicked off June 29 and ends today, July 3, 2023. Throughout its run, the event brought out some big-time showstoppers like Missy Elliot, as well as Tobe Nwigwe, Ari Lennox, Juvenile, Jagged Edge, Janelle Monáe, and Ms. Lauryn Hill. Essence Fest also celebrated the 50th Anniversary of hip-hop with performances by Doug E Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, EPMD, KRS-One, and Slick Rick. The five-day cultural gathering also streamed live performances on Hulu.
Lakeith Standfield spoke on a panel promoting his latest film, “Haunted Mansion,” about the representation of Black love based on a father-son relationship between an older Black man and a younger one. Lakeith said those interactions are often not explored on such an influential platform, and he’s excited for the Black community to witness the depiction.
Ginuwine was cutting up at Essence Fest and even brought out on stage a mascot in his likeness that many fans say he took from the memes he saw online. One user said, “Ginuwine is just out here havin’ the time of his life and I love that for him AND us!” We can’t be mad when a King has a great sense of humor.
The Zaddies were in the building! The Silver Fox Squad dripped swag-u as they walked through the convention center ten deep, causing women to stop, stare, and dip into capturing the shine they were spilling every which way. One admirer said, “I’m here for the silver foxes!! ???????????? cause these reddish brown cubs ain’t it! ????.” According to the group’s mission statement on their website: “Our excellence and dignity as men, inspiring other men.
