*Houston-based TikToker Tierra Young Allen has been jailed in Dubai for two months for the serious crime of being a woman and raising her voice at a man.
Allen, 29, was traveling with a friend while on vacation in Dubai when they got into a minor fender bender in the friend’s rental car. Tina Baxter, Allen’s mother, explained to Fox 26 that when Allen went to the rental car agency to retrieve her belongings from the car, “She found out she could only receive those items if she paid an undisclosed amount of money. She dealt with a very aggressive individual, a young man there who was screaming at her.”
Allen yelled back—something a woman is not allowed to do in the predominantly Muslim city. She was arrested and charged with screaming in public. Newsweek reports that when Allen attempted to pay the rental car company, the rude male staffer more than once raised the price. Police also confiscated her passport when she was detained.
“It could result in prison time. So it’s very scary,” Baxter said of her daughter’s situation in Dubai.

“She found out she could only receive those items if she paid an undisclosed amount of money. She dealt with a very aggressive individual, a young man there who was screaming at her. It’s been very emotional. There are some days I stay up all night crying,” Allen’s mother said.
As Vibe reports, Quanell X, leader of Houston’s New Black Panther Nation, said Allen “is in jail for one reason and one reason alone — she raised her voice.”
Quanell X added, “In that country, a female is not even allowed to raise her voice. If she raises her voice, it’s punishable by jail time. They have a strict law system that is really based on theocracy. Laws and customs are very different, so be aware of your actions to ensure they don’t offend.”
Quanell continued, “In our opinion, she did not commit a crime. Don’t punish women for doing the same thing a man can do in Dubai. It’s not fair and it’s not right. I’ve reached out to Dubai Consulate. I’ve reached out to the American Consulate there in Dubai.”
