*If you’re a fan of Doctor Who, like me, then I’m excited to share this newly released teaser for the 60th-anniversary special that features the return of David Tennant’s Doctor, and his companion Donna Noble plated by Catherine Tate

Neil Patrick Harris also appears to be playing a villainous character in the upcoming new season that will see actor Ncuti Gatwa playing the 15th incarnation of Doctor Who, along with Millie Gibson as the time traveler’s companion Ruby Sunday.

Per EW, Tennant described his return as “joyous.”

“[It was] an unexpected treat to get to revisit something that had been such a lovely wonderful experience fifteen years ago,” Tennant told EW. “There’s some precedent for ex-Doctors showing up for, like, guest appearances, but to get to have another proper runaround in an albeit slightly different long coat was a joy I never really imagined. I just hope I look as fast as I did in the early 2000s.”

Earlier this year it was announced that the long-running British sci-fi show is set to make history by casting a Black actor to play the iconic character over several episodes.

Gatwa will take over the journey from Jodie Whittaker, the first female Doctor Who, who departed the show in October when fans saw her rejuvenate into Tennant’s Doctor.

Born in Rwanda and raised in Scotland, Gatwa is expected to lead the next few seasons but he is not the first Black Doctor Who to appear on the show. Jo Martin, a Black actress, played the “Fugitive Doctor” in several episodes,  USA Today reports.

“There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared,” Gatwa said in a statement. “This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my upmost to do the same.”

He added, “And so as much as it’s daunting, I’m aware I’m joining a really supportive family.”

“Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show,” said Gatwa, a reference to Doctor Who’s two hearts.

“Doctor Who” will premiere exclusively on the BBC for the UK and Ireland. Disney+ will be the exclusive home for new seasons of Doctor Who in the U.S.
