American White Couple in Uganda Face Death Penalty for Torturing Foster Son | Video

*A white couple from South Carolina is accused of torturing their 10-year-old foster child from Uganda.

The couple had been living in Uganda where they worked in the Kampala area since 2017 after moving there to do humanitarian work. Nicholas and Mackenzie Spencer, both 32, now face the death penalty after being accused of physical and emotional abuse of their 10-year-old foster son Kayima John. The couple also allegedly engaged in child trafficking, Reuters reports. 

The Spencers took in three foster children from a local Christian ministry in 2018, according to PEOPLE.

Ugandan police said in a statement that the couple allegedly kept Kayima John “barefoot and naked throughout the day,” and would sometimes force him to “squat in an awkward position.”

The boy was also made to sleep on a bare wooden platform without a mattress or bedding.

A caregiver for the child told local paper The Daily Monitor that the boy was not allowed to attend school and that the Spencers monitored him 24/7 via camera surveillance. 

“We believe the victim could have endured more severe acts of torture, away from the camera,” per the Dec. 13 police statement.

“I wanted to leave the job, but I knew if I left without doing something about it, the torture would continue,” the caregiver allegedly told the Monitor. 

It seems a whistleblower concerned about the child’s safety led to the Spencers’ arrest, and they’ve been in custody since Dec. 9. 

Prosecutor Joan Keko noted at a recent hearing that the couple is a “flight risk” due to their lack of local ties or family. 

The couple’s lawyer reportedly told the Agence France-Presse that the charge for aggravated child trafficking “doesn’t make sense” because “last time we were in court, the state said that inquiries are complete.
