Street Next to Staples Center to Be Renamed ‘Kobe Bryant Blvd’

*A portion of Figueroa Street outside Staples Center will be renamed in honor of former Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant.

Figueroa Street will be unveiled as Kobe Bryant Boulevard between Olympic Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, according to Los Angeles City Council member Herb J. Wesson Jr, per SI.com.

“Championship parade after championship parade, Kobe Bryant led the procession down Figueroa St, from MLK to Olympic,” Wesson Jr. tweeted Monday. “After the @Lakers win this year, they will be marching down #KobeBryantBlvd.”

Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others died in a helicopter crash in Los Angeles on Jan. 26. He would’ve celebrated his 42nd birthday Sunday.

“To be able to continue his legacy is something that hits home for me and it’s easy for me because I’ve put in the work,” LA Lakers star LeBron James said of Bryant on “Kobe Day” on August 24. “And if you want to see results, you got to work at it. And it’s not about the wins or the losses and all of that nature. It’s about, a lot of people want to see results, but a lot of people don’t want to put in the work. And he wasn’t one of those guys. And I’m not one of those guys. So, it’s just an honor to be able to continue that legacy.”

On what would have been Bryant’s 42nd birthday on Sunday, Kobe’s widow Vanessa Bryant, penned an emotional post to her late husband and daughter, writing that “it should’ve been me” who died.

“I wish I could wake up from this horrible nightmare,” she wrote in part. “I wish I could surprise our girls and welcome you and Gigi home to us. I’m mad I didn’t go first. I always wanted to go first so that I selfishly didn’t have to feel this heartache. You were supposed to miss me. Gigi was supposed to be here with her sisters. It should’ve been me.”

On Monday (Aug. 24) the Lakers wore Black Mamba jerseys in their Game 4 playoff win over the Portland Trail Blazers.
