*In a move that’s got a lot of folks scratching their heads, Universal Pictures has permanently shuttered its highly anticipated musical project “Golden,” which was set to explore the childhood of music icon Pharrell Williams.
Originally titled “Atlantis” and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Michel Gondry, known for his work on “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” the film was expected to hit theaters on May 5. However, as sources reveal, the planned release date was pushed back internally last year and ultimately led to the film being deemed unfit for distribution, Variety is reporting.
The cast of “Golden” boasts an impressive lineup, featuring stars such as Kelvin Harrison Jr., Halle Bailey, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Brian Tyree Henry, Janelle Monáe, Missy Elliott, Quinta Brunson, Anderson .Paak, and Jaboukie Young-White. In a joint statement to Variety, Williams and Gondry expressed their disappointment at the decision.
“When all of us got into the editing room we collectively decided there wasn’t a path forward to tell the version of this story that we originally envisioned.”
Despite the film being in early post-production and approximately $20 million already spent, Universal has opted to absorb the financial hit rather than compromise its long-standing relationship with Williams. While some studios have shelved films for tax reasons, Universal has taken the uncommon step of walking away from “Golden,” emphasizing its commitment to the artistic vision of its creators.
The project was intended to illustrate the vibrant narrative of Williams’s upbringing in Virginia Beach, focusing on themes of self-discovery and Black culture during the summer of 1977. Originally featuring songs penned by the award-winning duo Pasek and Paul alongside Williams himself, “Golden” was poised to be both a musical celebration and a heartfelt coming-of-age story. Williams previously described the film as “so much more magical,” highlighting its essence as a tribute to Black joy and life.
In the wake of this decision, one must question the reasons behind the inability to achieve a satisfactory final product. While Williams continues his artistic pursuits, including his current role at Louis Vuitton and recent music contributions to Netflix, questions about the future of “Golden” and its creative team remain.
As for Gondry, he presses on with new projects including his soon-to-be-released animated work, “Maya, Give Me A Title,” due to showcase at the Berlin Film Festival.
While fans were left eager to see Williams’s vision come to life on screen, this chapter may signal a pause rather than an end to their artistic collaboration.
