*The Transportation Security Administration will introduce a new option for air travelers who arrive at airport checkpoints without a REAL ID or other approved identification. Starting February 1, 2026, passengers may use TSA ConfirmID, a modernized identity verification system available for a $45 fee.
TSA ConfirmID is designed as an alternative for travelers who do not present acceptable identification but still need to fly. Senior Official Performing the Duties of Deputy Administrator Adam Stahl said, “TSA ConfirmID will be an option for travelers that do not bring a REAL ID or other acceptable form of ID to the TSA checkpoint and still want to fly.” He added that the fee shifts the cost away from taxpayers, noting, “This fee ensures that non-compliant travelers, not taxpayers, cover the cost of processing travelers without acceptable IDs.”
According to TSA, travelers who rely on ConfirmID should expect additional identity checks and enhanced screening procedures. These steps may cause delays of up to 30 minutes, and travelers who have not paid the ConfirmID fee before arriving at the checkpoint could face even longer wait times that may result in missed flights.

TSA is encouraging passengers to plan ahead before traveling on or after February 1. Officials advise travelers to secure a REAL ID or bring another acceptable form of identification to avoid delays and added costs. Those who already have compliant identification will not need to use TSA ConfirmID.
The agency directs travelers to review the full list of acceptable IDs available on TSA.gov. Passengers unsure whether their driver’s license or state-issued ID meets REAL ID standards are encouraged to confirm compliance with their state’s Department of Motor Vehicles before heading to the airport.
