*Thomas Markle, father of Meghan Markle, is currently in intensive care after undergoing emergency surgery in the Philippines, his family reports. The 81-year-old became seriously ill at home and was rushed to a local hospital before being transferred to a larger facility for urgent treatment.
According to The Blast, Thomas Markle Jr. described the situation, saying, “I took dad to a hospital close to our home, and they did various scans, and the doctors said his life was in imminent danger. They raced us by ambulance, with the sirens going, to a much bigger hospital in the center of the city. My dad has undergone emergency surgery. I would ask everyone around the world to keep him in their thoughts.”
Thomas Markle has faced ongoing health challenges, including two heart attacks before Meghan’s 2018 royal wedding and a major stroke in 2022 that left him partially unable to speak. Thomas Jr., who has been caring for their father since the stroke, added, “My only wish is that Meghan shows my father some compassion. He is literally fighting for his life.”

The family’s estrangement stems from staged paparazzi photos Thomas posed for before the wedding, which he says he thought would reduce intrusive media coverage. Meghan addressed the rift in 2021 during her interview with Oprah Winfrey, recounting her attempts to clarify the situation with her father. She said, “When I asked him, he said, ‘No, absolutely not [that he hadn’t been talking to the tabloids],'” and described offering to help suppress the story if he told the truth.
Meghan added, “I genuinely can’t imagine doing anything to intentionally cause pain to my child. So it’s hard for me to reconcile that.”
Despite years of estrangement, Thomas has expressed his hope to see his grandchildren before he dies.
