*After eight seasons on the air, one of television’s most celebrated Black dramas is preparing to take its final bow.
Paramount+ has released the trailer for Season 8 of “The Chi,” confirming the Emmy winner Lena Waithe’s South Side Chicago drama will conclude its run with a 10-episode farewell season premiering Friday, May 22, exclusively on the platform’s Premium Plan. Produced by 20th Television, new episodes will roll out weekly every Friday.
The final season promises to deliver the series at its most intense. As the South Side faces its coldest winter yet, characters are pushed to the edge and forced into life-or-death decisions that will define their legacies. Legacy, conflict, joy, and pain collide in what the show’s creative team describes as the most emotionally charged season yet, per the news release. Returning cast members include Jacob Latimore, Birgundi Baker, Luke James, Shamon Brown Jr., Michael V. Epps, Hannaha Hall, and Jason Weaver.

Waithe, who created the series and executive produces under her Hillman Grad banner, reflected on what the show has meant beyond entertainment. “When I created The Chi, it wasn’t just about making a TV show — it was about owning our narratives and telling our stories with truth, care, nuance and complexity,” she said, per Deadline.
The series, which first premiered in 2018, holds the distinction of being the longest-running Black drama on premium cable or streaming. “To helm the longest-running Black drama on television is a huge honor and it’s something I don’t take lightly,” Waithe added.
“I’m deeply grateful to every single person who helped build this world — our writers, actors and crew who give so much of themselves to make this show what it is,” Waithe said.
All previous seasons of “The Chi” are currently available to stream on Paramount+ with the Premium Plan. Watch the Season 8 trailer below.
