*“The Chi” has made television history by becoming the longest-running Black drama series on premium cable. The popular Showtime series has now surpassed the previous record held by “Soul Food,” which ran for five seasons.
Entertainment journalist Wilson Morales shared the news on Instagram, writing: “Showtime’s The Chi recently surpassed Soul Food as the longest running Black drama series on the premium cable. On July 13, the show aired its 75th episode, which is part of Season 7.”
Lena Waithe’s “The Chi” is a poignant drama set in Chicago’s South Side, weaving together the lives of diverse residents through unexpected, life-altering events. The series captures their quest for hope and redemption in the face of hardship. It focuses on the profound impact of tragedies that shape the community’s emotional landscape.
Showtime describes it as “a timely coming-of-age story centering on a group of residents on the South Side of Chicago who become linked by coincidence but bonded by the need for connection and redemption,” earning acclaim for its compelling narrative. That cast includes Nicole Ari Parker, Vanessa Estelle Williams, Malinda Williams, Rockmond Dunbar, Darrin Dewitt Henson, and Boris Kodjoe.
Showtime has renewed “The Chi” for an eighth season, further solidifying its legacy. Following the Season 7 premiere, the series racked up 2 million cross-platform viewers. It now holds the title for Showtime’s most-streamed premiere ever.

Season 7 brought even more star power to the ensemble, with guest appearances by Phylicia Rashad, Karrueche Tran, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Kyla Pratt, Reagan Gomez, Punkie Johnson, and Tammy Townsend. They join a cast that includes Lynn Whitfield, Yolonda Ross, Jacob Latimore, Luke James, Shamon Brown Jr., Michael V. Epps, and Birgundi Baker.
