*Set in the Washington Territory of 1854, “The Abandons” introduces a sweeping Western led by Gillian Anderson and Lena Headey as two matriarchs steering their families through escalating conflict.
The new Netflix series charts the collision between a dynasty of privilege and a tight-knit group of outcasts, all bound by secrets, contested land, and shifting loyalties. Executive producer Christopher Keyser outlines a sprawling tale of survival and power as the frontier becomes the backdrop for profound personal stakes.
According to the series synopsis, the story focuses on two families living vastly different lives: the privileged Van Nesses, guided by Anderson’s Constance, and the Abandons, a makeshift household protected by Headey’s Fiona Nolan. Their worlds become entwined through “two crimes, an awful secret, star-crossed love, and a piece of land over a silver lode.” As the pursuit of control intensifies, the conflict reflects a broader American struggle between wealth and deprivation.

Keyser describes the show as rich with emotional and moral complexity. “This first chapter of The Abandons is a classic American story — the frontier, two families both at war and in love with each other, [and] a battle over who owns the land and who makes the rules,” he tells Tudum.
He adds, “In the middle of murder and revenge and a bit of illicit romance, we get to explore questions we never seem to get away from: What makes a family? How do you stay good in a bad world? And would you change who you are and what you believe in to protect what you love? But in this case, we do it all through the eyes of Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson, as two widowed matriarchs battling to survive. And that … is really something to watch.”
Headey’s Fiona Nolan anchors the Abandons, a group of outcasts who depend on her resolute leadership. She fights to preserve the ranch she built in Jasper Hollow, refusing to bow to pressure from the wealthy Van Ness empire. Her authority binds her adopted children together, even when her decisions come with severe consequences.
Anderson’s Constance Van Ness approaches power from the opposite direction — already armed with wealth and determined to expand it. She intends to grow the mining empire she inherited and strengthened, ensuring the Van Ness name dominates the region. Anyone who threatens her ambitions, especially Fiona’s family, faces her full force.

Fiona’s circle includes Elias Teller (Nick Robinson), Dahlia Teller (Diana Silvers), Albert Mason (Lamar Johnson), and Lilla Belle (Natalia del Riego), each committed to the family she has forged. On the opposing side stands the Van Ness clan: Constance’s driven son Garret (Lucas Till), her rebellious daughter Trisha (Aisling Franciosi), and her eldest son Willem (Toby Hemingway).
The series also features Brían F. O’Byrne as Walter Paxton, Clayton Cardenas as Quentin Serra, Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers as Oma Serra, Haig Sutherland as Pastor Collier, Jack Doolan as Leslie Moran, Jonathan Koensgen as Joseph Langley, Katelyn Wells as Samara Alderton, Marc Menchaca as Sheriff Hayworth, Michael Greyeyes as Jack Cree, Michiel Huisman as Roache, Michael Ornstein as Issac Marstein, Patton Oswalt as Mayor Nibley, and Sarah Grace White as Kiki.
“The Abandons” premieres exclusively on Netflix on Dec. 4. Watch the trailer above.
